As with any investment, proper maintenance is required to make sure that your reverse osmosis system is properly functioning and removing/reducing contaminants in your water. Keeping your reverse osmosis in optimal conditions will help to protect the membrane from fouling early, reduce the potential for inline contaminants and keep your reverse osmosis system running longer
Changing the Pre-Filters
The sediment and carbon pre-filters are essential in protecting the reverse osmosis membrane and components from being clogged up with debris or harsh chemicals. Changing the pre-filters of a reverse osmosis system should be done every 6 months to a year in most situations.
Changing the Post-Filters
Reverse Osmosis post-filters, like inline polishing filters or re-mineralizing filters should be replaced every year in most cases.
Changing the Reverse Osmosis Membrane
The Reverse Osmosis membrane usually gets replaced after 5-7 years. The easiest way to determine whether your membrane needs to be replaced or not is by measuring the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The TDS indicates the parts per million (ppm) of a number of contaminants in the water. Reverse Osmosis water should be around 10-20ppm and anything over 30ppm usually means that it is time to replace the membrane. A TDS meter is an economical way to monitor your Reverse Osmosis to make sure that the membrane is still in working order.
